Gossi claims to have performed a packet capture on Anthem’s demo and found that when the game fails to connect to a server, it floods the game trying to reconnect, creating a situation where Anthem is essentially DDoS-ing itself and EA. Obviously, this is a major issue for any game, especially one that relies on a steady internet connection. While Gossi’s claims can’t be entirely verified, the user did use a similar method to confirm that No Man’s Sky didn’t feature true multiplayer at launch, though it was later added in the Atlas Rising update.

It’s hard to say just how badly Anthem’s servers will perform if this is the case, but it may be wise for fans to temper their expectations for the game’s launch day. EA and Bioware do have a few weeks to sort out the server issues, but it’s always possible an issue slips through the cracks and causes more problems. If this unintentional self-DDosing does turn out to be what’s going on, hopefully, the crew over at Bioware will be able to solve it in time. Of course, there’s also always the possibility that Gossi’s tests are wrong, and Anthem has a relatively smooth launch.

Worst case scenario, the game encounters a few hiccups as eager fans flood its servers on launch day, which is always frustrating but not the end of the world. We got the chance to get our hands on Anthem in our preview and thought the game shows a ton of potential. Server issues would certainly hamper that experience, but it definitely seems like this is a game worth waiting for.

Anthem is set to release on February 22nd, 2019, for PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
